brève histoire des mots croisés

Le 21 décembre 1913, le Sunday New York World publie dans son supplément dominical la première grille de mots-croisés, conçue par Arthur Wynne. C'est un succès immédiat et et la publication de ses grille devient hebdomadaire. Malgré le succès, le Times resta le seul journal à publier des mots croisés jusqu'en 1924, ceci jusqu'à ce qu'une jeune maison d'édition, Simon & Schuster, réunisse une collection d'énigmes du Times sous forme de livre. Ce fut immédiatement un succès. d'édition. Les premiers mots croisés publiés en France le furent le 8 janvier 1925, dans le Dimanche illustré.

Les mots croisés sont une évolution des mots carrés - ou mots parfaits - antiques, qui sont des grilles faites de mots de longueur égale et lisibles tant horizontalement que verticalement et ne comportant pas de cases noires :

Un mot carré a été retrouvé dans les ruines romaines de Pompéi. Les mots carrés sont difficiles à composer et aucune grille de 10*10 cases n'a pas encore été mise au point, que ce soit par un humain ou par un ordinateur.

Les mots casés sont apparus, au cours de la deuxième partie du 19e siècle, comme une forme primitive de mots croisés orientée vers la pédagogie et destinée aux seuls enfants. Des images y étaient parfois utilisées comme indices de jeu. Les adultes ne s'y sont pas intéressés jusqu'à l'apparition des mots croisés modernes en 1913.

Les mots croisés furent très réglementés au début de la seconde guerre mondiale, les définitions étant susceptibles de cacher des informations secrètes. Tout au long de la guerre, le service britannique des renseignements militaires recruta des spécialistes du décryptage en organisant pour eux un concours de mots croisés.

Après les grilles de mots croisés standard, les journaux ont encouragé l'émergeance de nombreuses formes dérivées, des mots mystères, mots croisés cryptiques, des grilles blanches où les cases noires restent délibérément cachées,...

Les anglo-saxons ont développé une pratique orientée vers les grilles dont les cases noires sont disposées de manière symétrique alors qu'en France et au Quebec, on privilégie les grilles composées sans prépositionnement des cases noires.

Pour faire mentir les règles trop générales, les Scandinaves ont introduit une partique du jeu, les mots fléchés, où les définitions remplacent les cases noires. L'Espagne pratique, elle, surtout un jeu inspiré des règles anglo-saxonnes.

En Grande-Bretagne et en Amérique du Nord, le jeu de mots croisés a aussi pris un tour cryptique. Pour résoudre une grille cryptique, vous devez trouver la clé elle-même ainsi que la définition. Pour les non-initiés les indices des grilles cryptiques font souvent peu de sens.

Il se pratique, au Canada, un dérivé bilingue des mots-croisés, où, autant que possible, les mots horizontaux anglais sont définis en français et les mots verticaux français sont définis en anglais.
